December 6th: Claim Staking
After a summer of prospecting, winter is here and so our work becomes claim staking. Bjorn and I did a job near Thunder Bay today. The weather conditions were ideal: sunny, not too much snow on the ground, and -20 Celsius. Access was good and the bush was fairly good too. Had we have been hunting, there were moose and deer tracks everywhere.
The highlight of my day was getting whacked square in the eye by a 2" diameter alder tree (that I had just cut). There was an initial yelp of pain mixed with anger, then a minute of consoling myself while holding my eye. Finally, I checked in the compass mirror, nothing too bad, just a few cuts on the eyelid and a red eye.
Bjorn told me later how he had jumped in the bottom of an old mine shaft, trusting the ice, only to have the ice break. Apparently, the water had lowered and so there was only a few inches of ice in mid-air. Luckily, he was able to grab some trees that had fallen in. Personally, I wouldn't feel brave enough to jump in in the first place, but that is Bjorn. Other than that, our day was uneventful but a good day.
