The last day we spent on the east coast of Labrador in the Appalachian Mountains and on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean.

These spruce trees are very stunted due to the arctic climate.  A little further inland, where the trees are thicker, they are gnarly and tangled making them very hard to hike through.

A few years back I read some articles about the Appalachian Mountains.  I really wanted to go there, but it seemed unrealistic.  How crazy that I am standing here now!

This is just one of the many stations across northern Canada that are part of our defense system.  From what I understand, they are used to keep a watchful eye on any would-be invaders.
