Spend 5-7 days on a Canadian adventure hiking and exploring the gorgeous wilderness and local culture of Northwestern Ontario. Overview
Spend five days on an adventure hiking and exploring the beautiful wilderness and local culture of the Atikokan area.
Canadian Wilderness Walkabouts is located in an area with many lakes and waterways, in the boreal forest with majestic pines. You will explore off the beaten path alongside a competent guide in scenic areas.
Your adventure will include accommodations in a hand-built log home, snowshoes and cross-country skis*, simple home-cooked meals prepared fresh from quality ingredients, guided snowshoe hikes, cross-country skiing on the Beaten Path Nordic Trail System, and guided tours of the local museum and the hand-crafted canoe and paddle-making shops in Atikokan.
*We will pick up cross-country skis in Thunder Bay where skis will be fitted to guests, (there is no charge to guests).

You will be greeted at Thunder Bay International Airport which is a beautiful 2-hour drive from Canadian Wilderness Walkabouts. Your trip does not include transportation or flights. You will need to fly into Thunder Bay International Airport and book a vehicle rental. Thunder Bay International Airport is a 2-hour connecting flight from Toronto Pearson International Airport and Billy Bishop International Airport.

Day 1: Arrive at Thunder Bay International Airport, dinner in historic Port Arthur part of Thunder Bay, stop at scenic overlook of Thunder Bay and Kakabeka Falls, drive to Canadian Wilderness Walkabouts, located near Atikokan, Ontario
Day 2: Snowshoe hike on beaver pond system with a campfire lunch, roast coffee
Day 3: Tour the Atikokan Centennial Museum, Snowshoe around Steep Rock Lake Iron Mine, evening slideshow of prospecting across Canada
Day 4: Ski or snowshoe in world-famous Quetico Provincial Park, slideshow of early logging days
Day 5: Cross-country ski on the Beaten Path Nordic Trail System; Tour Atikokan’s paddle-making and canoe-making shops, evening snowshoe under starry sky

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Thunder Bay International Airport, dinner in historic Port Arthur part of Thunder Bay, stop at scenic overlook of Thunder Bay and Kakabeka Falls, drive to Canadian Wilderness Walkabouts, located near Atikokan, Ontario
Arrive in Thunder Bay International Airport midday, where you will be welcomed to begin your adventure. Guests will be outfitted for their cross-country skis and can shop in the Fresh Air Experience outdoor store. We will stop briefly at Hillcrest Park to enjoy the scenic overlook of Thunder Bay and eat dinner in the historic Port Arthur side of town. We will drive to Canadian Wilderness Walkabouts, located near Atikokan, Ontario stopping on the way to enjoy Kakabeka Falls, which is dubbed the Niagara of the North. We will arrive at Canadian Wilderness Walkabouts where guests will get a brief orientation of the accommodations. Includes dinner meal.
Day 2: Snowshoe hike on beaver pond system with a campfire lunch, roast coffee
After a hearty breakfast, we will fit each guest with snowshoes. We will head out for a traverse in the boreal forest where we will walk through a spruce swamp into a chain of small ponds. We will learn about beavers and see a beaver dam and possibly an active beaver house. We will arrive on a small lake where we will make a fire for lunch and enjoy a hot-cooked meal prepared over an open fire. After lunch, we will continue on this chain of ponds and creeks and loop back over a ridge with a scenic overlook before returning to our starting point. We will return to the log lodge and relax in the afternoon. A home-cooked dinner will be prepared for guests for 6:00 pm. At 7:30-8:00 pm, we will roast our own coffee from green beans. Includes all meals.
Hiking: 3.5 kilometres, 4.5 hours; terrain: fresh and packed snow, small hills.
Day 3: Tour the Atikokan Centennial Museum, Snowshoe around Steep Rock Lake Iron Mine, Evening slideshow of Prospecting Across Canada
After a hearty breakfast, we will drive 30 minutes to the town of Atikokan. Here we will take a tour led by Lois Fenton of the Atikokan Centennial Museum. We will learn about the rich history of the town and area of Atikokan. We will have lunch in the town of Atikokan, at the White Otter Inn. After lunch, we will snowshoe the trails surrounding Steep Rock Lake with scenic views of the historic Iron Mine Site. We will return to the log lodge for dinner at 6:00 pm. Watch an evening slideshow presentation of the host’s prospecting experiences in Canada. Includes all meals.
Hiking: 2-3 kilometres; 3-4 hours; fresh and packed snow, small hills
Day 4: Ski or snowshoe in world-famous Quetico Provincial Park
After a hearty breakfast, we will drive 20 minutes to the Dawson Trail Entrance to world-renown Quetico Provincial Park where we will embark on a ski or snowshoe adventure to explore Quetico’s natural beauty. The first part of our journey will take us through young red pine trees and a mixed boreal forest. We will then reach the Whiskey Jack Trail and continue through majestic jack, red and white pines on the Whiskeyjack Trail. We will stop at Baptism Creek for a campfire hot lunch before returning back on our trail. We will return to the log lodge. Dinner will be prepared for 6:00 p.m. In the evening we will watch a slideshow of the early forestry days hauling logs. Includes all meals.
Hiking: 5-10 kilometres; 5-6 hours; fresh and packed snow, small hills
Day 5: Cross-country ski on the Beaten Path Nordic Trail System; Tour Atikokan’s paddle-making and canoe-making shops, evening snowshoe under starry sky
After a hearty breakfast, we will drive to the trailhead of the Beaten Path Nordic Trail System. We will don our cross-country skis and head out on the trail for a classic style morning ski. We will enjoy lunch beside a campfire before heading back to the trailhead. We will first visit the Fletcher Canoe Workshop where local canoe-maker Thelma Cameron will tour us through her workshop where she builds custom wood canvas canoes from scratch. Next, we will visit the XY Company where local paddle-maker Spencer Meany will show us his hand-crafted custom made paddles and explain the history of the voyageurs. We will return to the log lodge and have dinner at 6:00 p.m. At 8:00 pm we will take a short 30-minute snowshoe to enjoy the spectacular starry night sky (clouds permitting). Includes all meals.
Skiing: 5-10 kilometres; 4 hours; track set groomed trails; snowshoeing 0.5-1.0 hours, 0.5 kilometres; Tours: 2 hours.
Day 6: Short hike close to the log lodge; farewell toast, drive back to Thunder Bay
After an early hearty breakfast, we will head out from the log lodge on Whiskeyjack Lake for a short hike. We will begin by crossing the lake and climbing the ridge for a beautiful view of the bay. We will continue along the ridge, then back down into a spruce swamp. We will join up with a small beaver pond where we will have a farewell toast. We will drive back to Thunder Bay where guests will be brought to Thunder Bay International Airport for their return flight home. Guests will have a sandwich lunch, time permitting we will stop at Kakabeka Falls briefly on the way to Thunder Bay.
Hiking: 1.5-2 kilometres, 1-2 hours; fresh and packed snow, small hills.

Cancellation and Transfer Policy
The full amount of payment is due on booking if purchasing online. Customers can book by phone with a 50% deposit when there is more than two weeks remaining before the excursion, but the remaining cost of the excursion will be due within two weeks of the excursion or the excursion will be cancelled and the customer will be refunded. There will be no refund within two weeks of the excursion. Customers will be given a 50% credit towards future excursions when they cancel.
To protect your investment, we recommend that you purchase travel insurance.

Weather is unpredictable and out of the control of Canadian Wilderness Walkabouts. Canadian Wilderness Walkabouts may cancel or postpone a trip if the weather conditions are deemed unsafe for its participants. Participants will not be reimbursed for such cancellation or postponing.
